Men in the UK will be able to buy Viagra over the counter after consulting with a pharmacist and without a prescription for the first time today.
ViagraConnect manufacturer, Pfizer, estimates more than a fifth of men aged over 18 in Britain suffer from erectile dysfunction, but almost half of those over 40 have not sought medical help.
The erectile dysfunction drug will be available in 14,000 stores across Britain and via pharmacy websites.
The tablets will be available exclusively from Boots until 10 April.
Those aged 18 and over will be able to buy the tablets following a conversation with a pharmacist or after filling out an online form. Men can ask to speak to a pharmacist in a private consultation room if preferred.
The pharmacists will determine whether treatment is appropriate for the patient and give advice on erectile dysfunction, usage of the medicine and potential side effects. They will advise men to consult with their doctor no less than six months after buying Viagra so that any potential underlying conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease can be investigated.
A Boots spokesperson said that the man affected by erectile dysfunction should buy the drug themselves wherever practically possible.
Men with severe heart problems, those at high risk of heart problems, liver failure, kidney failure, strokes or those taking certain other medicines, will still need to be prescribed the drug under the supervision of a doctor.
A four-pack of the tablets will cost £19.99 and an eight-pack £34.99.
Men who buy it will be advised that they can take a 50 mg tablet an hour before having sex, but should not use more than one pill a day.
Viagra is is already available as an NHS prescription free of charge for those eligible not to pay for their prescriptions.
The pharmacist will decide how many packs will be supplied in a transaction.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced in November it was to steer men away from buying the tablets from. In 2016 £17m worth of unlicensed and counterfeit Viagra was seized.
Kristie Sourial, Pfizer’s medical manager, said: “It’s important to remember that erectile dysfunction is a medical condition, and that the impact often goes beyond the physical symptoms – it can lead to men feeling anxious, depressed and lacking in confidence.
“Our hope is that the availability of Viagra Connect in pharmacies will encourage men who do nothing about their erectile dysfunction to seek help, and encourage those who are inclined to seek help to do so sooner.”

It has been more than two decades since the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved an antidepressant calledsildenafilfor the treatment of erectile dysfunction. The drug is used to treat symptoms of heart failure, such as a sudden loss of a muscle in the heart or the inability to get or maintain an erection.
The FDA’s first warning about the drug, the “Erection Drug” label, was released in December of 1998 and it went into effect on July 1. Sildenafil is a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor. It works by helping to increase blood flow into the penis during sexual stimulation. It’s prescribed as a second-line treatment for erectile dysfunction.
The FDA also warned the drug could have side effects, including a risk of blood clots and stroke. These side effects are not serious. Most of the side effects are mild and usually resolve within a few days.
A recent study has suggested that it could be possible to take the drug to improve erectile function by improving blood flow to the penis, in patients with the condition.
The FDA said there are other treatments that could help with the condition. These include the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen and naproxen, as well as other medicines, including blood pressure medications and blood thinners like warfarin.
Some of the side effects were mild in most patients. Most were minor and lessened by taking the medication as needed. There have been no studies linking the drug to the development of heart attacks.
In the meantime, many people who have taken the drug for erectile dysfunction are taking other medications, including antihypertensives, such as blood pressure medications like diuretics, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, and certain anticonvulsants. It is important to keep in mind that not all patients are at risk for heart attacks and stroke.
For more information on the use of drugs in erectile dysfunction, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
VIDEOAs the FDA warns, it is very important that doctors carefully monitor and check for any potential drug interactions. This is important because if a patient experiences a worsening of symptoms, such as fatigue, muscle pain, or nausea, the drug may not be the best choice for them.
As a result, you should discuss your doctor’s recommendations with the patient and ask him or her how they would like to use the drug if it were not for erectile dysfunction.
Your doctor will decide whether to use the medication for treating your condition, and also whether to change the dose. Your doctor will talk to you about other medications you may be taking and how they would affect you.
A common side effect of taking an antidepressant for erectile dysfunction is a decrease in sexual desire. Many people taking antidepressants for erectile dysfunction have experienced decreased libido or difficulty achieving orgasm. However, it is important to note that these side effects usually resolve after a few days or even a few weeks. Other side effects, such as a headache, may be less frequent but usually go away on their own over time. Your doctor can also check your blood pressure and monitor blood tests to help determine whether this is the best treatment option for you.
In some cases, you may be prescribed a combination of antidepressants and erectile dysfunction drugs, including Viagra. These medications are often used to treat a variety of conditions including:
Some people who are taking these drugs to treat erectile dysfunction may experience symptoms of a heart attack or stroke. It is important to discuss any concerns with your doctor before starting any new medication.
If you experience any of these symptoms, you should speak to your doctor about other options or treatments for your erectile dysfunction.
Viagra has been shown to cause some mild side effects. Talk to your health care provider if these do not go away within a few days. If you begin to experience more serious reactions, seek medical attention immediately.
Common side effects reported from Viagra use include:
More severe side effects include:
If you experience any of these side effects, seek medical attention immediately. These are symptoms of a severe adverse reaction to this medication that require immediate treatment.
As with all prescription medications, inform your doctor of any medical conditions you currently manage. Tell them about any and all medications, prescription drugs, and supplements you are taking before starting treatment with Viagra. Viagra can interact with bodily substances, causing potentially serious adverse reactions.
Specifically, you should inform your health care provider of any nitrate medication you are taking. Remember to mention any herbal products you use, especially St. John’s wort.
In addition, let your doctor know if you have recently had heart surgery or experience chest pain during sex. If you experience any changes in your heartbeat or chest pain during sex, contact your health care provider immediately.
